5 Things that make me happy this time of year

December 13, 2013

Normally, I would be writing about my views photoon insurance or a coverage question. I racked my brain trying to get inspiration to write something insurance related but was unable. With that in mind, I wanted to write about the small wonders of the Christmas season and how we can often overlook them. We all get wrapped up in the holiday season whether it is stressing over getting our shopping done or preparing for a family get together. This stress often makes us overlook small things that make this season such a time of happiness.

I wanted to share 5 small things that make me really happy this time of year.

  1. Mattoon Light Works: Living in Mattoon, one of the coolest things around Christmas time is the Mattoon Light Works. Peterson Park is filled with all kinds of Christmas lights. My favorites are Santa golfing, kids having a snowball fight, and Santa umpiring a baseball game. My wife and I have always really enjoyed driving through the light works, but with my son being two this year it is even more fun. I love his sense of wonder and hearing him say go again as soon as we drive out.

  2. Our Christmas Tree: My wife will really get a kick out of this. Every year I complain about how big of a pain it is to lug in a real Christmas tree and the work that goes along with it. This year I have just started to really appreciate how beautiful it is. My wife does a beautiful job decorating it, and it just brings a sense of calm and beauty during hectic times. You can see a picture of the tree above.

  3. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: I had not watched the old Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in years. My wife on a whim bought the dvd for my son not knowing if he would like it. He loves it! Do you know how cute it is to hear a two year old sing “Santa’s Elves” or “Holly Jolly Christmas”? It also made a two and a half hour Thanksgiving drive much easier.

  4. Favorite Christmas Movies: I think most people or families have a favorite Christmas movie they watch during the holidays. My family’s movie was Christmas Vacation. I still get a lot of joy watching it and the memories of sharing it with family.

  5. Christmas Eve: I don’t come from a big family, but my wife does. One of my joys is her family’s big Christmas Eve celebration. We will have around thirty people there this year! It is always fun to get together and catch up with such great people.

Lots of these joys can get lost in our hustle and bustle. The great thing is that these five things are free or inexpensive. I hope everyone can find such joy this time of year. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Festivus, or anything in between, I would love to hear about your favorite parts of the holiday season.
